This was a pain in the ass to put together. I'm not much for tutorials but i suddenly respect anyone willing to spend hours screencapping and laying this stuff out.
-EDIT- Ctrl+e merges down, not ctrl+m.
Multiply isn't the only layer setting that can produce good results. I sometimes use overlay or soft light. I suggest selecting all of the settings and seeing what they do on your own.
There are more intelligent and non-destructive ways to go about deleting the excess when applying textures to specific areas by masking. You can also use masks to apply textures as gradations and transparencies and bypass the select>load selection process, but I didn't want to go into those techniques as they are more advanced and I rarely use them to apply textures.
and, I have two questions:
Do yo create a texture especially for a painting?
Or. Maybe you just do them and then look what fits
the second thing
the different layers for different parts make really sense
but how do you go from 1 to i.e. 6 layers?
Do you multiplicate the orig. layer 6 times and then delete the stuff you don't want on every single layer?
i'm using layers less and less, most of the time i just do everything on one layer actually
i separate stuff into layers for the works i want to be more "complete", or the stuff i don't consider sketches, or in this case a picture i want to apply alot of different textures to in different places. most of the time i just slap one texture on the whole thing to make it kind of look like traditional art and i'm done.
I do both. I used to just have 3 - 4 scanned textures and i used those for everything, but now I tend to make textures for specific works because it feels more personal to me. the clone stamp tool is amazing for re-adjusting old textures and making them look like new ones.
as for the layer thing you got it right. see the above response i gave to sixnight for how i use layers nowadays. for this, i actually started painting everything before i decided i wanted to divide everything up to make the texturing go faster, so yeah i copied and selected and erased. YOU ARE PERCEPTIVE , normally my layers look all painty and not as neat

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
