Artist's Comments

Essay :

The arts have always been a transient experience for me. When I was younger I began to lose my ability to hear high-pitches and this made it almost impossible to play some of the sheet music I was expected to perform in my elementary school's orchestra. Now that I am older I can almost track month-to-month the decay in my ability to perceive certain sounds and oftentimes they ephemerally flicker just outside of my register causing my inner ear to vibrate in a way that I can briefly imagine them wholly. The visual arts are also a caustic experience for me as I suffer from a chronic auto-immune disease that oftentimes leaves my hands shaking and painful. When a canvas of mine has disappeared, gone missing or destroyed I have learned to appreciate the loss because of my deteriorating hearing. Things are beautiful and they exist in the moment much as my hearing will never be the same.

I have tried to capture these ghost sounds with color. Music and transience in art is pertinent to discussing the synesthesia of speaking visually as I have attempted to describe a language of soft versus hard and complimentary color versus triadic color inside of this painting, one filled with numerous details that would be difficult to memorize completely from an initial glance. In the end I wish for this image to remain startling color-wise yet lose itself in your mind once you turn away but not completely. Look upon it once more and hear yourself thinking. Is it visually speaking to you?

Please allow me to introduce myself; I'm a man of wealth and taste. I've been around for a long, long year, stole many a mans soul and faith, and I was round when Jesus Christ had his moment of doubt and pain.

Learning about your hearing condition gave me clarity about the way you choose to present your art. The chaotic colors and vibrant swatches that appear so often in your artwork now remind me of the way sound can be perceived. Lovely essay, and lovely piece.
